What we learned from Fashmatch

October 16, 2008 · 70 Comments

We are 300k shy of the 1million user generated outfit suggestions at Fashmatch, a personal goal of mine, but we won´t be able to make it. As of today, we will be forced to close our shop and with it to halt this project that aimed to revolutionize the way people get conductive to purchase fashion advice.
I am tempted by my ego to put all the blame on the economic crisis and say that Fashmatch is just one of those small shops victims of risk aversion and illiquidity, but that is simply not true. The external factors are just one in many determinants and at the moment it is the least instructive and valuable for me. I rather focus on what I could have done different in order to build a company that although immersed in uncertainty, could effectively coup with risk and deliver the goods regardless of the external adversities.
Here are some of the main reasons I think we failed to take Fashmatch to the next step:
1. Fine tuning versus exploring new grounds: At fashmatch we had, as I constantly repeated to anyone who would listen, a small but very active early adopter user base. With over 20 page views per user, close to 2 million page views, an average of 3 outfit suggestions per user and close to 20 minutes per session, users clearly enjoyed Fashmatch. Our challenge from early on was to move from this point to critical mass adoption, but we failed to accomplish this goal. The reason, I think, is because we decided to give priority to creating new features rather than fine tuning the ones we had. We said to ourselves that in order to leapfrog into a massive audience we needed easier to use features that will attract less engaged yet more mainstream users. But what happened is that the same old users kept coming back to our main application while the new applications barely brought new users. Underlying this decision was the notion that we had maxed out our early adopter audience. After watching how things played out at some of our competitors’ sites, that assumption proved to be false. In retrospective, I believe that our reasoning was supported by a “stronger leg” logic: we were better and felt more comfortable creating new features for the site than we were on fine tuning it. Every time we tried a fine tuning tactic we failed (that was our weak leg), while every time we tackle a “new features” tactic we had limited and small yet measurable success. Even though the strategy was not the right one, the tactics results kept pushing us the other way.
2. Lack of patience: As I have said in another post, we tend to confuse the speed at which tactics yields results on the Web with the speed at which strategy can yield its results. Tactics works fast: you can add an “invite friends” button and right then and there see if it’s working or not. Strategy always takes time: to move buyers from offline to online shops, to move communication from one medium to the other, all of these efforts take time to play out. I believe we were unable to commit to our fine tuning strategy also in part because we submitted it on an unrealistic (appropriate for tactics) timeframe. Persistence does not immediately include patience and without it, it can turn into disoriented efforts.
3. To get US funding, you need to be in the US: We set up a development office in South America and the idea was for me to stay in the US, doing Biz.Dev and capital rising. I never quite managed to make this work. I had to spend lots of time with the coders to make sure things worked out the way we needed. From abroad it became increasingly difficult to raise money.
4. More likely than not, you need more than one founder, or an early employee that complements you strategically: point no.2 was greatly reinforced by the fact that I had to run both operation and business. If I had a co founder who could take care of ops, I would have had more time to focus on fund raising which, as everyone will tell you, consumes more resources that you might think.

On the other hand, I started Fashmatch with a set of preconceptions that have been validated and that I believe also deserved to be shared:

1. Social media can empower a more conductive to purchase experience
2. Great web products don´t need lots of money to get off the ground and in front of users/consumers
3. Frugality has always proved to be a good business practice
4. Hard work is more important than knowledge and whit and often is the best way to acquire and preserve both.
5. Listening is more difficult and more important than talking. Listening to your consumers and understand what they want (this includes analytics) is the key ability of any business person.
6. Determination, hard work, flexibility and optimism are the key character features of any great entrepreneur.

Thanks everyone for sharing Fashmatch with us. These are times of reflection, but they won’t last long. Sooner than later the lessons learned need to be put in good use.

I enjoyed this website so much. I am sad that it has to go away. I love fashion and I would just like to say Thank you for giving us a website where we can put our fashion senses to an all time high. On this website I was able to put together so many outfits and I got great responses on all of my outfits. We all understand why it has to be this way. So once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH.

I think you did a great job in providing people with something so fun and unique, and its sad to let fashmatch go, but i understand that it is prob the best for your current situation. Maybe one day we will see fashmatch once again. ; )

P.S. I was wondering how to make a program like fashmatch. I’ve been looking for a way to plan my outfits on the computer and so i just took pics of my clothes and would combine them together, but that did not work as well as i had planned. I understand if you don’t want to share this info as it maybe a “secret”.

    Ok…This kinda confused me….
So the reason why fashmatch is no longer available is because you guys weren’t getting new users?!
Thats kinda dumb….really. It is. You closed the site because you weren’t getting new users but yet, you already had hundereds of people on it everyday. So you took it away from us…..yeah…I don’t like that at all.
I really enjoyed it too. Gosh, I wish you would not have closed it!

    Hey Jonathan,
I stumbled on your website sometime in the middle of the night and thoroughly enjoyed it beaucoup. It tapped into that old “mix and match” paper doll reality from the ago. And inspired some creative thinking and–sniff sniff– a bit of confidence building (Hey, that chick also thought that went with that and…so on)
Hopefully you’ll get your funding (private investors?) in hand next time. I work in the ad biz and know how quirky those advertisers/sponsors can be. But…..super big kudos for trying! Look forward to seeing your next venture.

FashMatch is the first fashion site I really got hooked to. It was really fun and at the same time “educational” making matches and commenting on other outfits. The matchers are very polite and candid and it was such a great experience with the whole ride. The closure of FashMatch really made me sad but inspite of it, I would like to thank the team for creating such a good site. Goodluck on your new endeavors and hope to see you again.

    God bless!

Like everyone else I also feel I need to state that I am so sad that Fashmatch had to close shop. I’m from South Africa and I loved the site, it was really cool and so much fun, I feel like it helped me discover my own style in terms of what I want to wear and how I want to put clothes together, with accessories and shoes.

I too wish you well on your next business venture Jonathan and perhaps it should be another fashion related business, I know you’ll have my support because Fashmatch was really that amazing.

    God bless you.

I absolutely loved this site! It became my passion. I discovered that the more I loged in, the more I convinced myself of what I finally wanted my carrer to be: A fashion Stylist/Buyer/Merchendiser. Thanks a million, because truthfully I always knew I liked fashion, but never had it occured to me that It’s my calling. Thanks to all the great input from the other users I now know what I want to do in life.

what a great refreshing post, most other founders who just blame everyone but himself. It’s so hard to know when it’s time to call it a day, when everything you have put into over the years you want to see it blossom. I’m sure you will be bouncing back with a new business very soon. It would be interesting to find out how osoyou is performing. The sit will be deeply missed. All the best, I have just built a cruise review social site and face challenges every day, but that’s part of the fun journey. http://www.socruise.com

I´m reading this at this very moment and I can´t believe it. I used to be part of the Fashmatch team (at least I feel that way, hope you think the same, Jon) and I think the idea was -and still is- brilliant. Today I remembered my days working at Fashmatch, so I decided to visit the site and I found this. I just wanted to thank you Jon for the opportunity, it was great to work with you and to spend time in our office “La Flor” thinking how to improve the site for all Fashmatchers. Everything happens for a reason, and if I learned something from you is that you can handle only what is in your hands. I think that you can achieve whatever you want, because you are a hard worker and because of your original ideas.

Keep on going Jon! Dont give up!

    Muchos besos!

I really hate that fashmatch is no longer available. When I found out it was going to be terminated I copied all of my outfits and emailed them to myself. I was going through my emails today and came across my outfits, the problem is I can’t view any of them because I keep being asked for my user name and password. There lies the other problem, I have no idea what my password was. Is there any reason why my password is needed? I’ve been able to view my outfits before on my email.
